Plastic Pipe on Bridges

Question: Can plastic pipe be installed on bridges?

Answer: The safety concerns with these types of installations are the possibility of mechanical damage, ultraviolet deterioration from the sun, and exposure to temperature extremes.

Pipeline regulations allow polyethylene (PE) pipe to be installed on bridges, provided that the pipe is protected from mechanical damage and ultraviolet sunlight. This is achieved by properly installing PE pipe inside of metal (steel) casing, which will protect the pipe from both issues. But the code also states that the PE pipe is not allowed to exceed the pipe temperature limits as outlined in the code, specific to design limitations.

Tip: Always refer to the company’s O&M procedures for all installation requirements.
